Panama Esmeralda Gesha Roast Pictures: Guatemala Gesha Roast Pictures

These are images of my preferred roast for each lot. Please note that these are taken under strong light with a macro lens. So color representation in the pictures might seem lighter than the same roast under normal household lights. But if you can look at your roasts under a good, strong balanced light, these images might compare well. Also, noting surface texture and the amount of bean expansion can be a good visual aid in roasting.

Lot 2: The highest price in the auction (or any coffee competition in 2008!) $125/Lb !

City Roast. 428 f , stopped shortly after 1st crack had ended. Very modest bean expansion, strong surface texture, patchy. Best aromatics at 12 - 18 hours rest, more balanced cup after 72 hours rest.


Lot 3: Very Limited Peaberry Lot, 150 Lbs only. $66/Lb

City+ Roast. 433 f , stopped after 1st crack has ended, and a modest time has passed. In the drum roaster I use, this is about 20-30 seconds. In a Behmor it might be slightly longer, depending on the curve, and in an air roaster it might be shorter! Modest bean expansion, somesurface patchiness, but a little more even color than Lot 2. Best aromatics at 12 - 18 hours rest, more balanced cup after 36-48 hours rest.


Lot 10: The Gold Standard Esmeralda Gesha $17.70/Lb

City/City+ Roast. 431 f , stopped after 1st crack has ended, and a modest time has passed. In the drum roaster I use, this is about 20-30 seconds. In a Behmor it might be slightly longer, depending on the curve, and in an air roaster it might be shorter! This has a lot of surface texture, and the crease remains fairly tightly closed (little bean expansion or "puff"). There was another roast I did to 434 f that was my favorite, but I didn't get a picture of it. So going a tad darker than this image is good. But we are talking a matter of seconds in the roaster. This is the sleeper lot, comparing well to last years Esmeralda Gesha we had, but a bit better I feel. It's from a late harvest picking.


Lot 5: The "Budget Lot" $10.50/Lb

Full City Roast. 439-441 f , stopped after 1st crack has ended, and a generous amount of time has passed to allow for further roast flavor development ... but no 2nd crack has occurred. This lot can take a little more roast, and it still has a very potent Gesha flavor profile. It seemed to have even more surface texture even though it had more roast (texture tends to smooth out with more roast).


 

Guatemala Acatenango Buena Vista Roast Picture

City+/Full City Roast. 437 f , stopped after 1st crack has ended, and a generous amount of time has passed to allow for further roast flavor development ... but no 2nd crack has occurred. Remember, this photo is taken under very strong light, and would appear darker to the eye under normal household light.
