Coffee and Espresso Cups from Sweet Maria's

Espresso Monkey Cups from Italy

Espresso Monkey design: White Porcelain Amalfi Cappuccino Cup and Sorrento Espresso Cup. So basically the Monkey is on one side and the logo is on the other side of each cup.

We went ahead and made our glorious Espresso Monkey cups again. But instead of having them made in Brazil on a copy of an Illy cup, we had them made in Italy on our favorite bowl-like Sorrento cup and Amalfi Cappuccino cup. These are thick, sturdy cups that hold heat well and are not so fragile as to chip and crack with use. They retain crema well and show it beautifully.

Sweet Maria's Skunk Cups from Italy

White Porcelain Amalfi Cappuccino Cup with out Skunk design.

Okay, it happened again. We "ended up" with our espresso monkey cup, and now we have our Sweet Maria's Skunk logo on our all-time favorite cups: the Sorrento Espresso cup and the Amalfi Cappuccino cup. We had these made at the factory in Italy and shipped them along with our order of MokaBrown-colored Sorrento cups. One side of the cup has our logo, the other side has the Sweet Maria's Skunk design on it. What 's with the Skunk? Our favorite cupping term is "skunky" which is actually a defect related to bad roasting. So a skunk enjoying coffee seemed funny to us, in that ineffable, inexplicable way. But hey, I love my espresso cup collection on top of my machine, each different, and it would be somehow lacking without one Skunk cup up there!

Moka Brown Espresso & Cappuccino Cups

We are selling the coolest traditional Espresso Demitasse Cup sets. Personally, I dislike overly-decorated giftware and thin wimpy espresso cups. These have been the standard Italian street-level espresso cup for decades. They are bar-ware (espresso bar ware) and so are not fine porcelain. There may be some imperfections in the glaze. They are the traditional MokaBrown (reddish-brown) color with white interiors. They are vitrified porcelain, and incredibly thick ( 3/8" side walls) and strong. Once heated, they prevent heat loss as you enjoy your short Espresso, or true 5 ounce Cappuccino. If you want a Big Gulp, go to 7-11!

Is brown not doing it for you? We decided to have the factory in Italy ship us the same Milano Espresso Cup in Colors! Maria liked the Fiesta Ware look of the colors, and all I could think is that having all these options is going to make for mistakes when we pack the orders. But that's just me, being negative again. Anyway, they are really cheery, and on top of my espresso machine they add something sorely missing among all the browns and blacks and beiges of the other cups ...color! Yipee. You are welcome to mix and match. Sorry, no international shipping on these.

Stainless Steel Espresso Cups with Round Handles

Incredibly nice Stainless Steel double-wall Espresso cup (2.5 Oz Capacity) and Cappuccino cup (9 Oz Capacity). Keeps espresso drinks hotter! These are made in China for the Italian market, but they feature a really neat rounded handle braze-welded to the cup, as opposed to the flat -band handle on the other S/S espresso cups we stock. Lighter weight than the others, the matching saucer is heavier but not beaded on the end. I use these cups for my regular coffee when its cold out: they make a huge difference and keep coffee much hotter than porcelain cups. The saucer is not pictured here, but click here to see espresso cup and saucer together. The Cappuccino size (9 oz.) will easily hold a double-Cap. and is bordering on a Latte size cup. The 2.5 oz. Espresso cup holds a double-Espresso. Note that all s/s cups should not be scrubbed abrasive pads, and are not dishwasher safe.

Bodum Thermal Glassware: Assam Cups, Pavina Cups, Bodum Glass Mugs

I enjoyed these new hand-blown, double-wall insulated glass cups for 4 weeks until I finally broke one. It was inevitable. In slow-motion, I watched the demitasse Assam cup roll off the table, drop 2 feet onto a wood board without breaking, then drop aother foot onto the concrete floor. That was that. When glass meets concrete, you know who wins. But I was surprised to see how it bounced off the wood surface without breaking and realized it is because the cups are lab glass (Borosilicate).

Now, that doesn't mean they won't break, as I demonstrated. But they are tougher than you might think. They are amazing cups, beautifully made, and make any coffee drink look elegant. In fact, the difference in the appearance, the hue, the opacity, of various single-origin coffees is so compellingly presented in these cups that (for me) it has underscored a source of coffee enjoyment; the beauty of brewed coffee. As you can imagine, espresso looks fantastic in the demitasse Assam and Pavina cups, in particular, shots made with a bottomless portafilter. The cups are double wall and they do insulate your hand from hot coffee, as well as help the beverage retain heat longer. No, it won't keep coffee hot for hours, but I tested 2 cups and a solid porcelain cup was 12 degrees cooler than the Assam 7 ounce cup after 10 minutes. The cups are great for cool drinks as well as hot, although I am not sure what cold beverage you serve in a 2 ounce cup. The large 12 ounce Pavina is most useful as a hot and cold drink cup. I like the Assam myself: I like the shape, I like the way it feels in my hand.

The rated cup capacity is not measured to the brim. The medium 7 and 8 ounce sizes hold another ounce if filled to the brim, as does the 12 ounce Pavina. The demitasse Assam and Pavina will actually hold 3 ounces, although that is a very tight fit in the Pavina (rated at 2 ounces). Note that all glasses are sold in sets of 2. There are no saucers ... who needs saucers? Cats! Sorry, no international shipping

Bodum has introduced a new double-walled glass mug, similar to the Pavina and Assam models, but with a handle. There are two sizes, a large 10 ounce (they call it a Latte size, which I supose is roughly accurate). And there is a 4.7 ounce they call an "espresso" size ... that's one big espresso! We call it "medium." I use it for my regular coffee cup and really like this smaller size! The insulated properties of this heat-tempered borosilicate glass keep your hand comfortable, and improve heat retention slightly. Really, it's about visual appeal, and in that regard these are my favorite cup for brewed coffee. Sorry, no international shipping

Like the other Bodum cups, they are sold in sets of 2

More about the glass used in the double-walled cups from Bodum: Bodum's insulated glassware is made from durable Borosilicate glass. Borosilicate glass is a strong heat-resistant glass that weighs less than traditional glassware. Used to make scientific lab glass, borosilicate glass (medical grade glass) is stronger than traditional "soda-lime" glass and can be used for everything from drinkware to cookware. Borosilicate glass substitutes boron oxide in place of the soda and lime used in traditional glassware. The boron oxide acts as a glue holding the silicate together and due to the small size of boron particles, the glass is held together tighter, resulting in a stronger glass. Some customers may perceive the glass to be "thin" as they hold it. It is important to explain the difference between borosilicate and soda lime glass. Borosilicate glass doesn't need to be as thick as traditional glass to be just as strong. Borosilicate is simply a different type of glass that is resistant to temperature swings and scratching. Because the particles are held together so tightly, borosilicate glass is dishwasher safe and will not become cloudy over time; you can rest assured that after 100 cycles, the glass will be as clear as the day you bought it. Simply treat it as you would any glass product and it will stand up to every day use. Dishwasher & microwave safe. Instructions for use: Bodum insulated, double wall glass is handmade by expert artisans, so they say. Because this glass is mouth-blown (their term, not mine!), each one may have slight differences in height, thickness & weight. Please use care when placing ice into the glass to avoid fracturing the inner layer. Please also avoid using metal spoons or placing the glass into a crowded dishwasher. These glasses will help to keep hot drinks warmer and cool drinks cooler. For best results retaining heat, pre-heat the glass before use. Dishwasher & microwave safe.
